South Florida’s incarcerated writers share a glimpse of what life behind bars looks like with an expressive anthology of poems and short stories.
An event hosted by Pan America in collaboration with Book & Books in Coral Gables hosted award winning writers like Scott Cunningham, Edwidge Danticat, Vanessa Garcia, Ryan Moser, and Darren Tinker to read poetry, fiction, drama, nonfiction, and memoir pieces from talented incarcerated writers.
Pan America’s prison and justice writing contest has been happening for over three decades, and this was the fifth annual breakout. Pan America defends free expression and persecuted writers while promoting literary culture.
“Over 40% of those incarcerated are eventually going to rejoin the general population so the question is what are we gonna do with those people,” said Cunningham, a poet who helped found the O Poetry Festival.
