One year ago today, Russia invaded Ukraine, causing a war that has killed 21,000 civilians and left 18 million people in dire need of humanitarian assistance according to the United Nations.
While Russia has continuously tried to take over Ukraine, the people of Ukraine have continued fighting and reclaimed over half of the land that Russia took.
Vitali Klitschko, the Mayor of Kyiv, said, “We are fighting for one year against one of the strongest armies in the world, the Russian army. Ukrainian soldiers have shown the whole world how tough we are.”
This week, President Joe Biden visited Ukraine and gave a speech in Warsaw, where he condemned Russian leader Vladimir Putin and pledged to send more financial support.
“A dictator bent on rebuilding an empire will never be able to ease the people’s love of liberty,” said Biden. “Brutality will never grind down the will of the free, and Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia, ever.”
