The sentencing trial against school shooter Nikolas Cruz began Monday, more than four years after the gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Cruz has already pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. The victims’ families are expected to deliver impact statements.

This trial will determine if he will be sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty. A 12-person jury of seven men and five women will help make the final verdict.
