New parents discuss birth during the pandemic (includes video story)

COVID-19 brought a lot of uncertainty this year. Having to adjust to this new normal has created a sense of concern for new and expecting parents.

Keenan and Magdaline Mintz had their first child in October. Magdaline said she was nervous and ready to finish with the delivery.

Layda Lissi Hernandez gave birth to her first child in June. Due to new safety protocols, expecting mothers are only allowed one support person during their time in the hospital. Hernandez wishes she had more support in the delivery room. “But I was very lucky and fortunate to have my partner there,” Hernandez said.

Medical professionals say that masks pose a considerable challenge, partly because babies depend heavily on facial expressions. “It’s been a big adjustment; they can’t see you smile,” NICU nurse Elisha Kairalla said.

Regardless, medical professionals are committed to babies’ and parents’ safety and care.

When Keenan Mintz looks back on 2020, his first thought will not be about the pandemic, but his first-born daughter.
