Moviegoers anticipate “Avatar” sequel (includes video story)

James Cameron’s “Avatar” will be back in theaters this weekend for a limited time. The release of the sci-fi sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” is set for Dec. 16 of this year.

The lengthy 13-year pre-production phase of the Avatar sequel was a result of Cameron’s dedication to the special effects that initially distinguished Avatar from other movies of its era.

The first Avatar movie made a total of $2.8 billion during its initial release back in 2009. Both movies combined have a film production budget of almost $500 million.

Cameron plans on releasing a total of five Avatar films, the last to be released in 2028. The production of the second film is complete, while the third is expected to hit the big screens in 2024.
