As Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho nears the end of his tenure, the board last night selected his successor.
Of 16 preliminary applicants, three candidates – Dr. Jose Dotres, Rafaela Espinal and Jacob Oliva – were interviewed in person for the position. Later, the board voted 6 to 3 to appoint Dotres as Carvalho’s replacement.
Dr. Dotres, who’s currently Collier County’s deputy superintendent, has already spent decades serving Miami-Dade schools as a teacher, administrator, and assistant superintendent.
Carvalho is expected to leave for his new job as leader of the Los Angeles Unified School District in February.
