Miami Book Fair brings over 500 authors and celebrities to Miami (includes video story)

The Miami Book Fair returned to Downtown Miami for its 39th year, featuring over 500 authors hosting events in English, Spanish and Creole.

From Nov. 13 to 20 Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus became a hub for readers and authors to celebrate literature.

This year’s fair was a star-studded occasion with events including actor Harvey Fierstein, past Miami Hurricanes, Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson, rapper DJ Khaled and actress Rosie Perez.

Because of the rain and severe flooding on Sunday, many vendors left early and admission was no longer charged. Events in the Children’s Alley were moved inside and the street fair was deserted compared to previous days.

Maite Oca, owner and operator of Gumbo Limbo Pottery, returned for her second year as a vendor. Even though Sunday was a slower day for sales, she remained optimistic and kept her tent open.

“We had a little bit of rain today but other than that it was a really good event,” Oca said. “I love to talk to people who like to use pottery. I see this stuff every day all day so I enjoy seeing other people enjoy it as well.”

While the street fair ended, the Miami Book Fair continues its author discussions and panels online all year round through its website, miamibookfair.com.
