Maskne: Acne caused by your mask (includes video story)

Since the start of COVID-19, it’s been required to wear masks to control the spread of the virus in many places. But many individuals have experienced severe breakouts on their faces. These are called maskne: acne that appears around the nose, cheek and mouth area from the mask. A combination of heat, friction and occlusion on the skin and, when combined with a moist environment, triggers the breakout.

In South Florida, Dermatologists and estheticians have seen an increase in clientele due to maskne. With long hour usage, you can be affected by the outbreak. Every case of maskne is different; if you have acne-prone skin, then you are likely to experience a more severe breakout than others.

According to Dr. Christopher O’Connell, Maskne can affect people of all ages, genders and lifestyles. Men are usually affected more than women since many shave their beards.

Part of the solution to fight maskne is to use a product with 10% Benzoyl Peroxide. Facials are also highly recommended at least once a week. Other recommendations include not over-exfoliating skin, cleansing twice a day and the use of SPF. And don’t forget to change your mask daily!
