Marco Rubio wins reelection and claims Miami-Dade majority (includes video story)

Just before winning reelection to the U.S. Senate Tuesday night, Republican Marco Rubio held a watch party. In anticipation of his third win, he emphasized that Miami is turning red.

“What I am most proud of is that this community, Miami-Dade, and that this state, Florida…have joined this incredible new movement,” said Rubio. “After tonight, the Republican party will never be the same.”

Rubio beat Democratic opponent Val Demings 57.7 percent to 41.3 percent and took the majority of Miami-Dade County, approximately 386,116 votes to 318,712 votes, according to the New York Times

The senator told the crowd about the predicted GOP majority in the Senate (which has not yet been decided and may not be for weeks). He said he believes that means Republicans’ political agenda will be passed — despite the fact the president is a Democrat.

“I am more energized and excited about working in the Senate than I have been at any other time, because I believe we are on the cusp of a new generation of leadership in this Republican party,” said Rubio.
