The Jan. 6 committee met on Oct. 13 for their final public hearing before next month’s midterm elections. In a historic move, every one of the committee members voted to subpoena testimony and documents from former president Donald Trump, after a sweeping summation of its case.
The committee went over evidence from their previous hearings as well as presented new revelations regarding what they say is Trump’s central role in the Jan. 6 attack.
Never-before-seen footage showed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other congressional leaders hurrying to find safety and making calls to defense officials for help as insurrectionists broke into the building.
Footage showed Senate Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer saying, “Why don’t you get the president to tell them to leave the Capitol, Mr. Attorney General, in your law enforcement capacity? A public statement they should all leave.”
The committee also presented documents that showed the secret service was aware days before Jan. 6 that Trump supporters were planning to storm the Capitol and that many of these supporters were considered dangerous and had violent intentions.
“Thanks to the tireless work of our members and investigators, we have left no doubt — none – that Donald Trump led an effort to upend American democracy that directly resulted in the violence of Jan. 6,” said committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson.
In addition to an upcoming report, the committee could still ask the Justice Department to pursue charges against Trump or his former aides.
