The Florida Health Department released an advisory for Dengue fever Tuesday after they discovered the first case of the mosquito-borne illness in Miami-Dade County on Monday.

Dengue fever is a virus transmitted by Aedes mosquito bites and is common in tropical areas. Some symptoms of this fever include muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, headaches, eye pain and on rare occasions can cause unusual nose or gum bleeding.

The Florida health department urges residents to protect themselves by wearing mosquito repellent, wearing protective clothing, draining any standing water and covering doors and windows in their homes.
