Dr. Vickie Cartwright was voted in 8 to 1, as the new superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, defeating Michael Gaal.

She has served as interim superintendent since Robert Runcie’s resignation in August. “I am humbled. I am honored,” Cartwright said after the vote, in her post-victory speech.

In an unrelated move, Miami-Dade County Public Schools bid farewell to Alberto Carvalho, who has served for nearly 14 years as the superintendent. Carvalho is leaving to take over in Los Angeles. Jose Dotres will fill his seat in Miami-Dade.
