Thousands of migrants are under the Del Rio International Bridge in Texas, waiting for processing and possible entry into the U.S.
Many of them–Haitian– have been sleeping in the dirt for several days with minimal access to food and water.
Haiti is still recovering from a major earthquake last month and the assassination of its president in July.
U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz also stated his agency aims to get this situation under control. “We are working around the clock to expeditiously move migrants out of the heat, elements and from underneath this bridge,” shared Ortiz.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas visited Texas on Monday to assess the situation. The Department of Homeland Security plans to ramp up deportation flights to Haiti and other destinations. It warns migrants not to travel to Del Rio.
The Department also announced that Customs and Border Protection will send 600 agents and officers to the region by today.
