Biden invokes old law to increase baby formula supply (includes video story)

Families are scrambling to find baby formula to feed their children, and the Biden administration is taking action to alleviate the nationwide shortage.

“When I get to work in the morning, I look for formula,” said Colleen Hafencher, a mother searching for baby formula. “When we’re sitting on the couch for an hour at night, we’re looking for formula.”

President Joe Biden on Wednesday invoked a wartime tool, the Defense Production Act, to help formula manufacturers get ingredients more quickly.

Planes will be sent “… to pick up infant formula that meets U.S. health and safety standards, so we can get it on store shelves faster,” President Biden said.

The scarcity is partly due to the closure in February of one of the largest manufacturing plants.
