Two photographers are using the power of the internet to help feed, clothe and raise awareness about Miami’s homeless population.
In December 2016, Cheo Sobalvarro went to a photo walk with Igers Miami, an Instagram photo group, where he met Robert, a homeless man who declined to give his last name. Sobalvarro said talking to Robert changed his perception of homeless people.
Tyler Harris and Sobalvarro, known online as @k1ngharris and @cheo1392, are photographers by hobby. The pair use Instagram to show people that the streets aren’t as dangerous as they may think and use Amazon to help the homeless get important necessities like hand and face wipes, menstrual products, lip balm, socks, and body lotion.
The pair didn’t meet until February 2017, when Sobalvarro held his first community giveback event. They later started “Beautifully Human,” a project to make the homeless feel like part of a community. The name, he said, came from the idea that we all want to feel human.
