After a death, traffic snarls FIU in North Miami (includes video story)

On Monday afternoon, North Miami police responded to a construction accident that killed a man near the entrance of Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay campus, resulting in serious traffic delays.

The investigation into the accident is expected to snarl traffic to the four schools located on NE 151st Street for the remainder of the week. On Tuesday, police named the man who died. His name was Gabriel Alvarez. By midday on Wednesday, a GoFundme for Alvarez’s family had raised more than $50,000.

Pablo Ortiz, vice provost of FIU’s Biscayne Bay campus, said the school is aware of the traffic delays for those trying to leave campus and that officials are studying how to make it easier to leave while the investigation continues.

“We have a plan with both police departments that we’re going to be able to get traffic out and keep it flowing so we don’t get caught in the same log-jam,” Ortiz said.
