From its offices in one of the world’s most important and vibrant cities, the SFMN New York Bureau provides professional reporting experience for FIU journalism students, who like their Washington, D.C., colleagues, learn how to develop sources, find stories, and immerse themselves in a variety of political, social, and contemporary issues. New York Bureau students work alongside longtime journalist and faculty member Neil Reisner at a co-working space provided by our partner, ALLEY, and located in the heart of Chelsea, one of New York’s most exciting and diverse neighborhoods. The program is offered during fall, spring, and summer semesters.
Both Washington, D.C. and New York SFMN bureaus offer hands-on academic experiences that reach beyond the traditional classroom structure. Through a combination of theoretical and experiential formats, students will engage in lively academic discussions, traverse each city while conducting investigative fieldwork and participate in professional workshops and events. The students spend the semester developing skills across all media platforms, producing text, videos, photos, social media, and graphics. Each bureau student receives extensive training, including on-site mentoring with student bureau chiefs.
This initiative is externally funded and in partnership with ALLEY co-working spaces.
