Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava visited Florida International University’s main campus yesterday to spread a message of responsibility and duty to college students.
“When students lead, everybody else pays attention,” Levine Cava said during a press conference. She emphasized the importance of vaccination and wearing masks as the new school year begins, saying, “We want to be safe. We want to take care of that vaccine, it’s the number-one thing to do. After that we must wear masks.”
This visit comes as many Florida school boards including Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, and Broward are contradicting Governor DeSantis’ executive order prohibiting mask mandates. Protests erupted yesterday at the Lake County School Board (near Orlando) before its members agreed to overrule the governor.
A parent at the protest said, “I don’t want them to wear masks. It’s my kids. It’s my choice. It’s my freedom.” Many students, though, are fighting to require their peers to wear masks.
Christina Romani, a Lake County student was disgusted by people fighting not to wear masks. “This is ridiculous,” she said. “This is not okay.”
