Today Florida International University will be honoring those who lost their lives at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando five years ago.
The massacre took place on June 12, 2016. In addition to the 49 people killed, 53 were wounded in a horrific mass shooting at the gay club.
The Pulse Nightclub Vigil was put together by the Pride Center at FIU and FIU’s Pulse Vigil Committee.
“[My week has been really busy with] the Pulse remembrances, panels, [and] getting the word out about Disarm Hate, but also honoring those 49 lives that were lost,” said Jules Brudek, the director of Disarm Hate. “It’s challenging, but we gotta do it and I really wanna see change, so whatever it takes.”
The ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m. and will end at 3:00 p.m. It will take place at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at the Modesto Maidique Campus.
There will be six guest speakers, including FIU’s president Mark B. Rosenberg and MJ and Fred Wright, the parents of Pulse victim and FIU alumnus Jerry Wright.
The vigil event will be collecting donations for the onePULSE Foundation.
This is a hybrid ceremony. FIU members can RSVP online via Panther Connect. Non-FIU community members are also encouraged to attend, however they must RSVP online as well. The Frost Art Museum has a 50-person capacity, therefore it is first come, first served.
