As we head into the fall, concerns about the rise of COVID-19 cases, especially in children, are mounting.
“We’re not getting the support that we should be getting from our government in a moment of a health crisis, ” said President of the Miami-Dade Teachers Union, Karla Hernandez-Mats. “So we’re doing everything that we can to educate our folks and make sure they do the right thing.”
According to new data from The American Academy of Pediatrics, children now represent more than a quarter of weekly cases.
In Miami-Dade, 13 school employees have died, all of whom were reportedly unvaccinated. “Recognizing that 84% of all those that are currently hospitalized in Miami-Dade are unvaccinated,” said Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. “The misinformation is having an impact in our community, and it needs to stop.”
This comes as a Florida judge has allowed mask mandates to continue in schools, against the governor’s orders. (The state issued an emergency appeal Wednesday night.) President Biden is set to speak today about the next step in the fight against COVID-19.
